Check a builder or tradesperson licence

Search for a contractor's licence or find your own licence number and details.

Introduction

If you're hiring a building contractor or tradesperson for services such as residential building, wiring, plumbing, draining, gas fitting, air conditioning or refrigeration work (except plug-in appliances), you should check that they have a valid contractor licence.

You can search for a licence online. If you cannot find it, contact NSW Fair Trading to confirm that the person holds a contractor licence.

To check a contractor's digital licence or certificate, refer to Check a digital trade licence or credential in the Service NSW app.

What you need

Any one of the following:

• licensee name
• licence number
• licence type
• Australian Business Number (ABN)
• Australian Company Number (ACN)
• location (suburb, postcode or local government area).

How to check

1. Select the 'Check online' button.
2. Enter the information you have into the search bar.
3. Select the search icon.
